St. Richard's Latin Club Competes Against
Area High Schools
The St. Richard's Latin Club participated in the 28th Annual Hoosier Certamen Invitational Competition at Cathedral High School. Certamen is simply the Latin word for "game." However, "Certamen" in the Latin Club sense is a quiz-bowl, braingame-like format in which teams of at least two students compete against two to three other teams in answering questions having to do with Classical culture and history, Latin grammar and vocabulary. There are three divisions: Novice, Intermediate, and Advanced. Each team plays three rounds against different teams from different schools in their division. The three teams with the highest accumulation of points at the end of the three rounds proceed to the Championship round to compete for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. Both the St. Richard's Novice and Intermediate teams made it to the Championship round. Our Novice team, consisting of Emily Kowalik, Zach Li, Will Burton-Edwards, and Isobel Bowles, won 3rd place out of 14 teams. Our Intermediate team, consisting of Caroline Garau, Rebecca Weber, Alex Lombardo, and Sophi Ricker won 2nd place out of 6 teams. As before, we were the only Middle School in attendance and competed quite successfully against high school teams! Great job, Latin scholars! Carpe diem!
