One might think that Matt Butler is a bookworm by looking at his academic achievements. The awards and recognition that he has received are extensive and impressive, but they don't begin to convey the personality of Matt Butler. As a young boy, Matt began collecting hand-painted metal toy soldiers, authentic representations of soldiers during the British Empire in India and during WWI. His collection now resides in a beautiful 6-shelf glass cabinet with entire regiments represented. His love for history grew, and he enjoyed learning American History in Dr. Jim Fadely's 8th grade American History class. He also served as a page for State Senator Teresa Lubbers (with classmate John Hammond) that same year. He recalls, So many state representatives and senators made compliments about our school uniform and how it must reflect on where we went to school.

Matt has many fond memories of his experiences at St. Richard's School. Playing backboard dodge ball and intramural basketball with Mr. Sherrill and Ms. Peoni was a blast for a middle school boy. The supervised free time in the middle school allowed us to play chess, talk, work on the yearbook or the school newspaper, and socialize. This prepared me for Brebeuf's system of Personal Responsibility Time (PRT's). The 8th grade trip to Washington, D.C. was also a memorable experience. For a teenager already fascinated with history, these opportunities provided the basis for what will become Matt's life work. Finally, Matt looks back with a strong sense of nostalgia for all the ceremonies we had in Chapel, particularly Lessons and Carols.

Matt stays in close contact with friends he made at St. Richard's School, especially John Hammond, Jake Corbin, and Matt Woods-Koppitch. He is a regular guest at the annual SRS Alumni Reunion at Christmastime (December 17th this year). He is shown here with his good friend, Baron, who followed in the footsteps of another longtime friend, Duke, a German Shepherd who passed away a few years ago. Matt loves Purdue and Colts football, and he intends to adopt United Kingdom ?football,' as well as Formula 1 and Rugby when he begins at Cambridge this October. He speaks Spanish on an intermediate level, but is fluent in German. He is also a member of Delta Chi Fraternity and served as its Treasurer during his junior year at Purdue University.

Email Matt at mesbutler@wmalumni.com to wish him well as he pursues a PhD in History from Girton College, University of Cambridge. St. Richard's School is proud that Matt continues to build upon the classic curriculum he received at SRS and will expand his understanding of how historical global events impact present-day life.

Arthur Plews
St. Richard's School Class of 1998
Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School Class of 2002
Princeton University Class of 2006

Arthur Plews is not difficult to recognize. Look up. At 6'7?, Arthur towers above most mortals and definitely above the little ones at St. Richard's School. Like his brothers, Arthur played basketball at St. Richard's. He also played at Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School and on the JV team at Princeton University. This, however, was in his spare time.

While attending Princeton, Arthur's classes were held in the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. He graduated with high honors. He also rowed on the crew team, coached basketball for the YMCA, and wrote for the student newspaper, The Daily Princetonian. Arthur spent one semester of his junior year at the University of Cape Town in Cape Town, South Africa. His senior thesis, International Food Aid from the United States, was a basis for Princeton to select him for a one-year fellowship with the United Nations, working in Africa for the Department of Population (their version of the Department of Health). Arthur will travel about Africa assisting research and media coverage of health issues affecting Africans. Arthur was grateful for receiving a background in French at St. Richard's School. He continued his French studies at Brebeuf and Princeton. Once Princeton awarded Arthur the fellowship, he knew that he would be required to use conversational French. Arthur spent the summer fine-tuning his conversational French by attending the Middlebury College language immersion program. He is now in Dakar, Senegal, where his fellowship will be based.

This young man has more than just brains and athletic ability. He is also a compassionate human being who devoted much of his high school community service to autistic children. His friendship with an autistic classmate changed the lives of many people, some in ways he may never know.

We are proud of Arthur Plews at St. Richard's School. We are proud of other students and alumni like him who demonstrate leadership, global readiness, and civic responsibility. Arthur has shown the desire to improve the world around him with compassion, energy, and a drive to succeed.

Kitty Hall

KittyHallcrop.jpgKitty Hall, SRS Class of 1996
Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School, Class of 2000
Indiana University, Double Major in French and Anthropology
Sorbonne, Paris, France
Universite de Provence in Aix
Teaching high school English in Marseille

When Kitty Hall began taking French in Kindergarten at St. Richard's School, she didn't realize what an important skill it was to become in her life.  Following the standard classic curriculum at St. Richard's, Kitty participated in the 5th grade French Back-to-Back program.  Thirteen years later, she still corresponds with her French family.

Upon graduation from St. Richard's, Kitty attended and graduated from Brebeuf Jesuit.  She was accepted at IU-Bloomington where she received a bachelor's degree with a double major in French and anthropology.  Two of her four college years were spent abroad in France at the Sorbonne in Paris and the Universit de Provence in Aix.  She now teaches English to high school students in Marseille.  She has also authored the French and a portion of the Italy sections of the new MTV Europe guide book by Frommer's, in stores this December.

Thanks to St. Richard's, I have been learning French since Kindergarten, explains Kitty.  I started studying other cultures while I was there and found that I have a love for foreign cultures and traveling.  St. Richard's gave me the opportunity to learn the French language at such a young age, and I am very grateful for that.  The school prepared me extremely well for my future.

In addition to providing Kitty with global readiness, St. Richard's School also established a love of learning and community service.  St. Richard's gave me the drive to continue with my education and to take it seriously.  Kitty is now enrolled in a master's program at a French university (Facult de medecine de Marseille).  When she finishes this program (in 1 years), Kitty's dream is to work in hospitals and clinics in Africa and to change health care policies that will improve the level of health in developing countries.

Bonne chance, Kitty!
